Is the sport of Bull Riding Growing?

Without a doubt it is one of the fastest, if not the fastest growing sport around. Since we launched our new web-site in April our International Sales have nearly tripled. Clearly the Professional Bull Riders television coverage and additional tours are driving the new found interest to become a bull rider. With all the money that is at stake who could resist? Right? It's not like you need to raise a million dollars and go buy a NASCAR to start competing for your chance to be a World Champion.

To give you an idea, and this is just our piece (rodeo gear), this week alone we have boxes going out to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Brazil, Mexico and a ton of APO Military related customers all over the world...yes including IRAQ. Since Christmas I know we have sent to Korea, United Kingdom, Thialand, Wales, Germany and Chile....too me that is absolutely amazing.

Just this morning we received an order from Australia being shipped within the US to Jared Farley...now you tell me, small world or what????

So regardless where you might live, we will gladly do everything we can to eliminate any language barriers to help you get started in the best sport in the world ~ Bull Riding!!! I'm still having trouble adjusting to the time difference when I call Australia. Last time I called and woke the guy up. I apologized and then realized it was just after mid-night. He said "No...no mate...that's ok I need some gear"! How cool is that?

It truly is becoming an International Sport. Where are you?

On Friday afternoon Adam Steen, Nathan, his wife Heather and myself are planning to head out to Denver for the National Western Stock Show and the Denver Markets produced by WESA.

From the sounds of it the weather could be a real pain trying to fight our way out and back. However, we're goin' and that's all there is too it. We've rented a four-wheel drive SUV and are bound and determined to find our way....even if we have to rent snowmobiles (let's hope not~).

Tonight the PBR is in Denver and I sure wish we could have made it for that, however we'll catch the PRCA events and will be sure to fill you in and provide some picture. (Congrats to Curt Check for winning a round).

The main reason we go is to meet with our suppliers like Saddle Barn, Phoenix Performance Products, Beagley Braiding Company, Weaver Leathers and hundreds of other top industry manufacturers. It really is the who's ~ who for anything in the English and Western Lifesytle Industry.

We are hoping to make new connections with the latest product makers and find out where everyone see's the Industry going.

It should be a fun week. I know I'm really looking forward to it. If you happen to be planning to attend, be sure to look us up!!! Shouldn't be to hard...couple Iowa guys wandering around.

It should say...the PBR is in town! I heard about this and finally found a picture. Great publicity for the PBR and our sport of bull riding.

As it turns out the PBR had a bunch of taxi's covered in cowhide (perhaps not the real deal~but they were furry from the looks of it).

Free taxi ride's throughout New York to promote the shows. Now that is some creative marketing for the rest of us promoters to think about.

I know that I've seen the running of the bulls down main street in several large cities...kind of modern day cattle drive to celebrate the Rodeo coming to town.

Professional Championship Bull riders coming to Des Moines

One of the newest Bull Riding Associations is coming to Des Moines, Iowa. They are called the PCB - Professional Championship Bull Riders and it is sure to be an event you'll not want to miss.

From what I heard some of the best bulls from the midwest will be in attendance. So far I've heard that High Risk Bucking Bulls from Monroe, Iowa owned by Bryan Weyers & Kenny Kingery will bring bulls, as well as Curt & Cory Check and John Thomas.

We are hoping that Nate will get entered and be able to ride at this one being so close to home base. However with over $5,000 in Prize money it could be a trick to get entered up. Most riders are pretty eager to be getting on this time of year with fewer shows.

I know we'll be there and hope that Des Moines and Iowa will shows it's support and love of the sport of bull riding.

Iowa Hits a Home Run with National Pheasants Fest in Des Moines

I for one am absolutely thrilled to see Iowa selected to host the National Pheasants Forever - Pheasant Fest.

Fortunately, last night I was reminded of the events when I was at a Casey's General Store in Huxley, Iowa and saw the discount ticket for a $1 Off Pheasant Fest 2007. The third-ever Fest is taking place January 19, 20 & 21, 2007 in Des Moines after previously being held in Bloomington, Minn. (2003) and Omaha, Neb. (2005). Omaha officials estimated that the 24,205 attendees had an economic impact of between $2 and $2.5 million on the Omaha economy in 2005.

Oddly enough last night I was at Casey's getting gas to go to the Monster Trucks Jam at the Iowa Events Center. Great show by the way.

So I called Dad (Milt Owen - Director of the Mitchell County Conservation Board as well as proud member of PF) on my way into the office today and wanted to hear more about this years National Convention.

WOW! I was shocked. They expect somewhere between 22,000 to 25,000 to attend throughout the convention. Most will be from Iowa, however a good number from the surrounding states as well as others from everywhere in between potentially flying into Des Moines International Airport.

He mentioned something like 400+ Exhibitors & Displays with seminars going on throughout. I can't wait to go. Amazing event and incredible boost to the Iowa economy (both Pheasant Hunting and the National Convention). One look at the roster of sponsors and it is clear that many of our rodeo friends are involved. Cabela's is one of the Major Sponsors of the PBR is also one of the top sponsors with this year's PH convention. THANK YOU!

I'm curious. Are you involved in your state with PF or other similar conservation/hunting organizations? National Wild Turkey Federation, Whitetails Forever, Ducks Unlimited?

PBR Fantasy Bull Riding kicks off new Tour for 2007

The PBR just announced a new version of their successful PBR Fantasy Games. It's a real challenge if you haven't had a chance to play. You'll really become addicted...be sure to check it out.

Here is what they said in part of the release from the PBR, Inc.;

The first of the two news games is the PBR Event Challenge. Fantasy players will have the opportunity to select the Event Winner, Short-Go Top Qualifier, High Marked Ride Score, and High Marked Bull. The winner each week will be the individual with the highest number of correct picks. In the case of a tie, a series of questions have been built into the game to determine one winner. Each week the highest scoring person will receive a specially designed PBR Fantasy t-shirt. The Fantasy player at the end of the 2007 season with the most points will earn a 2007 PBR World Finals wool jacket. There is no fee to play the PBR Event Challenge.
The second PBR Fantasy challenge to be unveiled is the Lucky Bucker$ game. For each entry, players will select five active bulls and five active riders for the upcoming event. The culmination of all scores of the player's five riders and bulls will be that player's score for the event. A series of questions will also be used to determine tie-breakers. The 2007 season will be broken down into three segments with a Grand Prize being awarded for each segment. Each of the three lucky Grand Prize winners will be awarded a 2007 PBR World Finals leather jacket with their name embroidered. PBR fans can enjoy Lucky Bucker$ for only $9.99 for all three segments.

The last time the PBR was in New York at Madison Square Garden Big Ron Craver the Cowboy Saver and Clint Dickes hauled Gus out for several Promo stops.

All I remember was them commenting on how difficult it was to get around in downtown New York with the truck and trailer....and the looks on everyones faces when they brought Gus right in the front door of the buildings.

I'll have to dig up the picture of Ethan on him when he was just a couple months old.

First take a moment to go over and review this article posted on supervegan.com

What did you think? Pretty amazing stuff. Well guess what? If we ignore it they won't go away. In fact they have been able to get a few large rodeo supporters to cave in and discontinue simply to make these ill-informed, media monger, tree hugging ~Leaf eaters (Save a Tree~ Eat a Leaf? I'm confused) go away!

For some of you, you might not be aware that there is an effort to eliminate rodeo and everything related to animal captivity. They are attacking through state and local governments attempting to bar any form of rodeo competitions from being held within city limits.

I for one do not have all the answers, however clearly have my concerns and feel we need to collectively embrace our traditions and put up a fight like none other and run these folks right out of Dodge!

I'm interested in hearing from you what you think our industry needs to do to address this type of misleading press. Should we encourage the major associations to adopt a central rodeo support organization such as www.FriendsofRodeo.com ? It's a tough one, however would greatly appreciate your help with suggestions.

I know I'm thrilled to see the US Army, Cingular, B & W Hitches, Enterprise Rent A Car, Yamaha, Johnsonville Brats and other "non-traditional" companies become huge supporters of our industry. Let's let them know how much their support means!

Wow, this one crept up on us! I can't believe Christmas is in a couple weeks. I don't know about you but this year absolutely flew by. We made so many great changes this year that I really can not wait for next year.

So what is on everyone's Christmas list? Sure looks like a bunch of you must have been good, because business has been great...so hopefully you'll be one of the lucky ones getting some new gear.

Who I think will win the NFR

Well the books have officially closed on the 2006 PRCA regular-season and the field is set for yet another exciting Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Rodeo Attitude once again has asked my opinion on each one of the championship races. Before we do that let's discuss the format of the Wrangler NFR. It is a ten round competition featuring the top fifteen cowboys and cowgirls in their respective events. The top fifteen contestants are determined by money earners in each of the seven events contested in a PRCA rodeo with the top money winners earning the right to qualify for the Super Bowl of Rodeo. Really and truly it is any ones ballgame in each event, as Cody Hancock would prove in the year 2000 when he would go from 15 coming in to the National Finals to first. Each go-round pays $16,022 for first place in the round; however, they do pay six places in each go round for a total of $51,683 per round. Plus to the contestant who over the ten performances has the fastest times or the highest scores from each performance will receive an average check of $41,088. The average also pays down eight positions for a total of $155,048 in each of seven events. If you factor in all of that in most races any of the contestants could come out a champion.

That said now I will give you my opinion on who has the best chance in each event category starting with the All-Around Cowboy. The All-Around Championship unlike all the others it is given to the cowboy who wins the most money throughout the year in two or more events and if you ask me it is really only a two man race between three-time all-around champion, Trevor Brazil, and the PRCA's all-time money leader, Joe Beaver. They are the only two cowboys to qualify for the Wrangler NFR in two events each respectively qualifying in the tie down roping and the team roping. The 2005 and reigning All-Around Champion, Ryan Jarrett, is currently in third place in the All-Around race but unlike last year he has only qualified in one event this year. Trevor has a huge lead over Joe, but Joe is the more experienced of the two with 20 previous qualifications to the National Finals. As to which one I think will come out on top, I think Trevor Brazil will be your 2006 All-Around Champion Cowboy.

In the bareback riding there are several contenders for this year’s championship but as to who I think has the upper hand? Well that is the number one man going into the National Finals, Will Lowe. If he succeeds this will be his third world championship in this event, just two away from tying the record which stands at five held by legendary bareback rider, Bruce Ford. Speaking of the Ford family, there will be three contestants at this year’s National Finals with that last name, all three being cousins. Two qualified in the bareback riding. Royce is currently fourth in the standings and is the son of Bruce Ford. Heath is thirteenth in the bareback standings. The third Ford, Jarrod, qualified in the bull riding. Among the competitors for the bareback championship I thank the biggest threat to Will Lowe is Andy Martinez who has been very consistent this year. In my opinion the championship will once again go to Will Lowe if he can keep doing what he has done all year.

In the steer wrestling there are a number of competitors in my opinion that stand out. Dean Gorethge has the lead but there are several contestants behind him that are looking to take it from him. Sean Greenfield and Jason Lahr to name a few but I think the reigning world champion, Canadian Lee Graves, who is currently in 7th position is certainly capable of sneaking up and taking it once again this year. If I had to pick one now it would be him. I think the average is going to tell the tale in this one because it is so close. Whoever wins the average has the best chance to win the world championship this year.

In the tie down roping Cody Ohl has the lead at this point and also has an NFR record of 6.5 seconds. With a who’s who of tie down roping competitors following close behind him it is really hard to predict a winner at this point. Trevor Brazil is right behind him followed by Blair Burk and then reigning All-Around champion Ryan Jarrett with Fred Whitfield close on his heels. To be honest, any of the top fifteen guys could win this one; it just comes down to whoever makes the least amount of mistakes throughout the entire NFR. My pick to take this event, though, is long shot, Monty Lewis.

In the saddle bronc riding we are staring at the possibility of history taking place. Dan Mortensen who is currently number two in the world standings. He is currently tied at six world shaping ships with legendary bronc rider Casey Tibbs. If Mortensen wins he will be the only man in pro rodeo history to have seven saddle bronc world championships. On the other hand the man sitting in the number eight position, the legendary Billy Etbauer has five championships to his credit and last year alone won well over $100,000 at the NFR. The man currently in the lead, Cody Demos, has something to say about that and we can never count him out, but in my opinion Etbauer has the advantage even though he is so for back. He is my pick to win it all this year.

In the team roping it is my opinion this one is too close to call and we will not know a winner until the final go round. It is my opinion the team has the experience is Speed Williams and Clay O'Brien Cooper. There are a number of championships between these two men although they came with different partners. Jake Barnes and Clay o Brian Cooper combined as a team for seven world championships which was a record until Rich Skelton and Speed Williams came along and not only won eight world championships but won them consecutively. In my opinion, these two were the best team of all time. They went their separate ways in 2006 so I am very much looking forward to watching Clay O'Brien Cooper and Speed Williams just to see if with all that experience if they can once again earn a world chain kinship and I think they can do that.
In the barrel racing I see three ladies that stand out. Mary Burger, who is currently second in the standings and Britney Pozzi, who is currently number one, but I am going to go with reigning World Champion, Kelly Kaminski, to do it once again on her hoarse Rocky. Once again it will come down to who makes the least amount of mistakes and who can leave all the barrels standing throughout all ten performances.

Now onto my favorite event the bull riding which is my field. The biggest question is will Matt Austin be healthy enough to defend his championship. In the early years of rodeo several men had back to back championships but in the last two decades only Blue Stone, who won in 2001 and 2002, has accomplished this. Will Matt do it remains to be seen and in my opinion it all comes down to how healthy Matt Austin is coming into the finals. He has the lead but Wesley Silcox is also currently out with an injury and it is still questionable whether he and Matt will even be able to compete this year due to those injuries. Sonny Murphy will be making his first appearance at the National Finals Rodeo he is currently sitting in the second position but it will be interesting to see how well he handles the pressure of being at his first ever NFR with riders including Dustin Elliott, B. J. Schumacher, Bobby Welch and all the rest of the field is breathing down his neck. It will be great to see Fred Boettcher make another appearance at the NFR after a series of injuries have kept him out for a couple of years. With all of these great bull riders this year it is hard to choose a winner but if Matt Austin does ride and is somewhat healthy it will be hard for anyone to catch him.

Who will win the championships we will all have to turn to ESPN and ESPN 2 for coverage of this year's Wrangler National Finals Rodeo to find out.

My New Phoenix Model 2020 Leather Bullriding Vest

Just thought I would let everyone know that I have gotten my new vest in. I switched from a Ride Right Master Pro Vest to the Phoenix Model 2020 Pro Max Leather Vest. I must say I am very happy with the vest.

I got one custom made with two color leather. It is black with Gator hide print leather over the shoulder straps and one the front pockets. It is a tall Medium and it fits perfect. The vests outer shell is top quality leather with a zippered front and a velcro cover that protects the zipper from getting a lot of dirt in it during use.

The one thing that I really like is that on the inside of the vest is has an elastic band that pulls the vest close to your body and really gives it a great fit. Also the inner protective material can be removed so that in the case that your vest gets torn it makes so it can be repaired pretty easily. Also so if you happen to add a sponsor you can get it added to the vest at most any place that does embroidery. All you have to do is take out the padding and they can get at the areas to do the logos.

I am very excited to try it in Dec. at the Des Moines, IA event. The one other thing that is great about the vest is the light weight feel and how well I can move my upper body with it on.

Iowa Pheasant Hunting

Nathan called me on Friday morning on the way into the office and said "Hey! Do you want to do something fun this weekend before things get too crazy around Christmas and we can't get away"? Well I thought perhaps it was a good idea...it's not like we've had much R N' R over the past 6 years. The business side has always taken priority. So I said "I'm all ears. What do you have in mind"?

Well it wasn't exactly what I thought he'd come back with. He said he wanted to go to a Paid Hunt Club for Pheasants. Now keep in mind we were both raised in a family where our Dad has been the Executive Director of The Mitchell County Conservation Board for almost 30 years (2008 will mark 30 to be exact) and all of us long standing members of Pheasants Forever. Paying to hunt? Perhaps to buy a license to go Elk Hunting in Colorado...but never just to get access to land. Not that it was forbidden, we were just raised with so much great public land that we didn't need to explore beyond that. So after a bit of guilt I gave in and agreed to give it a try.

Yesterday we went to Oakwood Sporting Resort just outside Sigourney, Iowa. About a 2 hour drive from Winterset on HWY 92. We couldn't have asked for better weather. Perfect morning just below freezing. Now keep in mind I was thinking Game Farm...like flocks of birds...bang, bang...couple hours...little walking and we'd be back on the road. I was pleasantly shocked. It was perhaps one of the best weekend hunting trips I'd been on in years.

We arrived around 8:30 to over 800 acres of exceptional habitat that pheasant hunters dream about. Beautiful rolling Iowa hillsides filled with top notch foodplots and brome grass. Way more than the 3 of us (Duke - Nathans Gordon Setter) could ever cover in just a day. We even had a chance to take a break in the clubhouse and watch a bit of the Extreme Bull Riding from Indianapolis.

As it turned out it was extremely enjoyable and well worth the few bucks it cost. We ended the day with 8 roosters (I won't mention how many we could have shot~we needed to visit the sporting clays first). We were back on the road heading home just after 3:30. Who knows, if there is enough interest we could make an annual USRodeoSupply.com Pheasant Hunt. If you are up for it...let us know and we'll get it booked and start planning.

The perfect specimen of a world class bucker—big, strong, smart, athletic and regal. Famous to fans. Respected by riders.That was 13X Kid Rock. Owned by Roy Carter and the superstar son of the famous bull, Alligator, Kid Rock sadly closed his reign on bucking bull perfection when he died Saturday, April 1 in Texas. He was near his owner’s home and in the back of a trailer, in a familiar place he knew well, the way he’d start every new road adventure. Pulling away from the Carter Ranch, in the back of a trailer, rolling down the road. The only thing missing from the picture was Carter, who was in Albuquerque at the PBR’s ABBI Classic and Built Ford Tough Series event. Carter, the proudest and most dedicated owner I’ve ever met, once told me with a proud grin, “You can say anything you want about me and I don’t care. But one thing you have to admit is that I have the baddest bull and the baddest dog in the whole world. Kid Rock and Stormy.”I couldn’t agree more that day about his bull. As I stood there soaking up the mural-sized print of Kid Rock in his Texas pasture, I thought to myself, “Yes, he surely is the epitome of athleticism, power, structural perfection and pure regalness.” Just his horns and color pattern alone said “bad bucker.” But what really grabbed me was the easily readable look on his face and in his eye. It spoke loud and clear to me.

That day I remembered the many voices I’d heard in the last few years that said Kid Rock was overrated. My mind rolled his stats like a movie: Ridden only 8 times in 47 PBR outs; a permanent spot on the Bucking Bull of the Year ballot; the 2003 Reserve World Title; and another legitimate shot just around the corner at the upcoming 2005 World Finals. That was impressive alone—then you had to add that he was a young bucker, and just 7.

I turned around and said to Carter, “I don’t know about your trouble-makin’ dog that has picked three fights since I showed up, but I agree on your bull. He is bad.

”Then a huge ruckus broke out. It was Stormy, his “baddest” but still beloved dog. We ran outside and there was Stormy in a no-contest dog fight with the biggest dog I’d ever seen, right on Punk Carter’s porch. When the fight broke up, the entire yard was mad at Stormy. First it was one dog, then the half-dead chicken, then Punk’s daughter hollering at him. Then it was the nap of his neck in Roy’s hand as he was banished to the truckbed which would serve as his jail cell for the rest of the afternoon. Stormy just sat there with the same darn look on his face that I just saw on Kid’s. “I’m bad. I know it. Not conceited—don’t have to be. I’m just bad. I’m Stormy.”I had to confess. I grabbed Carter’s shoulder and said with a laugh, “All right Roy, you have the baddest bull and the baddest dog in the whole world—I admit it.

”Stormy may still be at it, and even Carter for that matter, but Kid Rock will drift away into the pages of bucking bull history in the same regal way he’d walk calmly through the lead-up each time he was loaded, and there that look would be: “I’m bad. I know it. Not conceited—don’t have to be. I’m just bad. I’m Kid Rock.

”There is no doubt in my mind he was Bucking Bull of the Year material each time that latch cracked, as well as in his everyday life at Carter’s ranch. I’m with J.W. and Justin on this one: “If you disagree, climb on.” Since he’s gone, you’ll just have to imagine looking deep in Kid’s eye, and saying to yourself, “I’m bad. I know it. Not conceited—don’t have to be. I’m just bad. I’m Kid Rock.”Good-bye Kid.

Buying Bull Riding Gear On-Line

Sure seems that more and more hype is floating around out there in the market today. Almost everyone has popped up with a web site touting how great they are at this or that. I think it is going to get a lot worse, before it get's better unless the consumer does their homework on who they are buying from.

For those of you that don't know, we've been around selling on the internet since early 2001. When we started to test the waters and determine if there was a buying market for rodeo equipment on the internet, while still producing and promoting special events such as bull riding in the midwest.

I can't tell you exactly how many have come and gone during this time, however a considerable number have since vanished. On one hand I'd like to think we've played a part in that we have continued to raise the bar on what the buying public demands and we have met and exceeded that at every chance. With that, many of those that dabbled in this business decide it just isn't worth the hastily and bow out closing up shop leaving many customers asking what happened. Thats the other hand....I hate to see any business close.

Most people have a fantasy that they can build a website and suddenly they will have millions of dollars in sales. What they fail to see is that along with that comes security issues, credit card processing, order management, inventory and oh' ya CUSTOMER SERVICE...the list goes on and on. Most simply wanted a part-time home based business that didn't have to deal with it as a business.

We decided very early on that we wanted to pursue the rodeo equipment sales side instead of the promoting and production for one main factor...there wasn't a dominant provider of equipment nationally or internationally selling direct to the consumer that exceeded the customers expectation. It was still very old school and a ton of very disfunctional, incomplete and insecure websites out there.

Has it been easy?

Heck no. We have made a ton of mistakes ranging from poor performing manufacturers & distibutors to the core operating system and beyond. However, we continue to expand our operations because our customers have understood the changes that we have made and continue to make that benefit them directly.

Like what you might ask?

Take a look around on the web if you are looking to buy bull riding gear. What do you find? I mean really find? (Keep in mind my background is ten years in telecommunications and network management exposed to the early days of the web). Well, for those that don't know...you find a ton of websites that are the furthest thing in the world from secure.

What do you mean secure?

I mean I wouldn't give them my name little lone my credit card information. They haven't taken any steps to prevent fraud and most are hosted by free hosting companies. Whos to say if they will be there tomorrow considering the number of internet hosting companies that are crashing and burning with the demise of the telecom industry.

What else?

Well, the truth is most of the sites that claim to be selling bullriding equipment are part-time hobbyist having the manufacturer drop-ship the goods direct to the end customer. They do not have a physical store or catalog or any background selling bull riding gear. Do they list a phone number, contact name, address in the lower 48 states? Heck we had someone copy all of our product images and post them on a site that was in a data center in India. Come on the last I knew bulls were sacred in India...I doubt they look too kindly on riding them. In the end they were shut down for fraud. I have no idea if anyone actually fell for buying from them.

Ok, so now you have me freaked out about shopping on the internet!!!

Sorry, that's not at all my intent. There are some great on-line companies selling gear. Some even home-based. My point is there are some basic things that you should look for before clicking that button to buy it just because it is the lowest price.

Like what?

There are several industry standard that should minimally be looked for;

Security
VeriSign
Contact Numbers
Physical Store/Minimally address
Do they stock it?

Let's start with security:

We have partnered with ScanAlert to test our site daily and immediately identify any vulnerabilities. Considering we utilize Netsuite we have yet to have any type of incident and have received comments from ScanAlert at how amazing it is that they scan and seldom find a site come up clean without having to make some type of change(s). Kudos to Netsuite for their stellar performance in this department! As of this writing you will not find any other website selling bull riding gear or equine tack and saddles subscribing to ScanAlert. I guess the FBI & the Marines use it....I mean why not. I trust it. So should you.

Next, let's look at what they use for payment processing. Is it only PayPal? Not that PayPal is bad...it's not we love it. However if it is their only payment form it may be a good indication that they couldn't get a Merchant Account to process credit cards...which lends well to part-time. Which makes you wonder exactly how long will I wait to get my order.

We use VeriSign PayFlow Pro. A trusted dominate industry leader in secure credit card processing. Look around on most major brand retailers sites and you'll find this one.

I could go on and on about this. It's just things we've learned that everyone else in our industry doesn't think is worth the time. I hear from competitors/suppliers "I could never justify spending that kind of money for something like that". All my rant is really about is to caution you from jumping at the first price that comes along because there is way more to a price than meets the eye. If you are looking for a trusted company, that works full-time, stocks most of the items, has experience in the field and takes your privacy and security serious....than all we ask is to come pay us a visit on the front end. We hate hearing the horror stories from those that went somewhere else first and didn't get what they expected.

One of these next ones I'll post about why shopping on-line from trusted sites is better than paying cash or using a money order....in the end it give you the customer much better protection than you might think.

Extreme Commuter - Rodeo Athlete's?

The other day on my way home I was listening to WHO - 1040 (ya I'm getting old...it's AM Radio...guess I burned out on the same funk played every 15 minutes on every FM station) and the topic was something about the typical time spent commuting to work in and around Des Moines. Seemed like something around 12-18 minutes on average. Huh...I thought....sure wish that was what I had ever day.

I started dreaming about how much more time I'd have if in fact I could jump in the truck and be here that fast. Anyway...the show went on to discuss that the Extreme Commuters were pulling 1.5 hours of drive time total in a day to and from work. Again I thought wow...man that would be great...I guess I'm the Extreme/Extreme Commuter.

You see for about the last year or so I've been running up and down I-35 from Ames, IA to Winterset. Let's just say I lost the battle over school districts for the kids and we all like our office/warehouse in Winterset. So for now I average about 2 1/2 to 3 hours a day on the road....In my ultimate grumbling about how bad I've got it, it hit me about those that we help everyday....yep that's right you guys running the rodeo circuits and I about chocked thinking how terrible I've got it. Ya right....big deal. For those that are serious and even some that are bordering on it run across the country everyday of the week all year round in pursuit of the championships. With luck and a lot of skill you'll get a paycheck. But for many they don't get much at all.

I recall a year or so back Brandon Berry, a great bull rider from Louisiana, was making the trip up to see us about ever week, in and amoungst his full time gig riding the PBR Built Ford Tough Series. It would be like "well guys gotta run and grab some groceries back home (oh..by the way in Louisiana)...I'll see you in the morning". The next day off to Florida or New York or somewhere out in California.

I no longer wine about how bad I've got it. I love what I do and have been graced by God for each and every day. My hat is off to each and everyone of you that pursue what you love....even if it requires some serious windshield time or if your lucky flights. Keep it up! If someone can come up with a label for it, drop me a note!

Three Brazilian Bull Riding Brothers make history in the PBR

The PBR tour makes its 27th stop at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, MI on Friday and Saturday as part of a 29-date season that will culminate with the two-weekend world finals in Las Vegas beginning Oct. 27. And count the three Moraes brothers -- Adriano, Allan, and Andre -- as contenders. The trio are the first three-brother group to compete together in bull-riding history and the only brother trio to be part of a PBR World Finals.

World Champion Bull Rider Terry Don West will be hosting several upcoming bull riding schools. Both Nathan and I have attended and strongly endorse his school. TDW generally has several events reserved for past students to compete in for huge prizes and new trucks etc. Well worth the money.

Chainsaw Carving for America's Heroes Festival

Heartland Rodeo Productions along with High Risk Bucking Bulls are joing together in a two day rough stock and barrel racing event in Grinnell, Iowa. The event will be a part of the Chainsaw Carving for America's Heroes Festival which begins September 28th and last thru September 30th. Proceeds will benefit our wounded soldiers. The rough stock rodeo and barrel racing begins at 7:30 PM on both Friday, September 29th and Saturday, September 30th. The bull riding is sanctioned by both the Bullriders Of America and the Iowa Rodeo Cowboy Association. There will be 30 contestants in the bull riding each night with a short go competing for $1000 in added money. Saddle bronc, bareback and barrel racing are sanctioned by the Iowa Rodeo Cowboy Association. Added money for saddle bronc and bareback is $500 and for barrel racing is $250. These rodeo companies and associations are all members of the Rodeo Attitude Program and we are extremely proud of what they are doing for our wounded soldiers and their families. This will be the final event on Heartland's Red, White & Blue Tour. They will present saddles to their year end champions at the end of the Saturday event. Judges will be Todd Crase and John Thomas. Todd is also a member of Rodeo Attitude. Announcer for the event is Bruce Brown and funnyman will be Tadpole Dennis. For more information on the rodeo event call 319-560-3062

Amazing how many times I hear that in a day! Guy's are constantly calling and e-mailing us for a package for bull riding. First things first...we need to understand what you need. Although you may not know what you need, in the course of a conversation or a few quick e-mails we can definitely help you build the best possible package to meet your riding ability and your budget.

We strongly caution everyone from jumping on the first "package" that appears to be what they need. You'll find more often than not a rope that is junk or a vest you wouldn't ride a skate board on or a shipping rate that is sky high....or better yet a 20-30% restocking fee or no returns policy.

Take a deep breath...you do not have to have everything to get started! We want to help you succeed in your rodeo career! We encourage bull riding schools throughout your career regardless how many times you've already gone.....you will pick up something new. We often times recommend things that save you money and convince you why it is ok to buy the lesser priced item...although other times we educate on why it is best to purchase something more expensive if in the long term it is higher quality or provides more protection.

First off I would just like to introduce myself. My name is Nathan Owen and I work for www.usrodeosupply.com I have been riding bulls for about 8 years and have been working for US Rodeo Supply for about 2 years. I feel that our company can offer alot more than just great products. We also can offer knowledge of all the products that we sell. That to me is worth alot when you can buy something from somebody who actually knows how something works and can give you there own take on how good a product really is. I specialize in the bull riding side of our sales, from phone sales to on the road sales to guys who I personally ride with week in and week out. I have met alot of great people and made some great friends in the time that I have been in the sport.

I guess I just want to let everyone out there that is either in the sport or thinking about starting that the best investment you can make is in good quality gear. Bullriding is a serious sport and if you expect to be any good you have to take the time and spend the money to get good quality gear. Don't get me wrong, you can save sometimes in buying used, but if you don't know what you are looking at, somebody could really take advantage of you and your checkbook!
